Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs any combinaton of instructional tasks to assist teaching staff. Assists the classroom teacher by working one-on-one or with small groups of students to reinforce skills taught in the class and performs miscellaneous routine duties under the direction of the teacher to enable the teacher to spend more time on instruction.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: The position requires a minimum of 60 semester hours from an accredited university or a passing score on the Para Pro Praxis Test. Prior experience in working with computers and various software programs is required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Collaborates with classroom teacher to coordinate instructional support responsibilities.

• Under a teacher’s supervison, plans, prepares and develops various teaching aids, such as study guides, charts and visual/auditory supports.

• Under a teacher’s supervision, presents subject matter information to students, utilizing a variety of teaching methods and techniques.

• Assists students individually or in groups with academic assignments and social skills to reinforce learning.

• May support activities of daily living including, toileting, feeding and diapering.

• Physically restrains students in therapeutic holds only after participating in non-violent crisis intervention training.

• Utilize de-escalation verbal intervention techniques with students.

• Monitors students in the classroom, cafeteria, on the playground and in the community. (May need to guide play and intervene with behavior.)

• Provides support for students as planned by professional staff (teachers, therapists, social workers, etc.).

• Follows team prescribed procedures for academic, social, communication and behavioral intervention plans.

• Performs related duties as required.
