The Social-Emotional Skills Teacher serves as a member of the Social-Emotional Learning team at the Indianapolis Metropolitan High School and will be a member of a school community with an educational model that complements the acclaimed barrier removal work Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana performs.  Utilizing a positive behavior and restorative model, the Social-Emotional Skills Teacher works with students on developing and practicing the social-emotional skills required to be successful during high school and beyond.  The teacher works directly with the Social Emotional Learning Lead to provide targeted assistance and services to students grades 9-12 in a “best fit” environment for teenagers with significant barriers to education.  With our core values of Professional, Unstoppable, Motivated, Accountable, and Supportive, the school priorities include:

Example Duties and Activities

  • Deconstructs standards to create units of study and daily learning goals that will drive students to standard mastery of social-emotional standards and skills.
  • Facilitates research-based, standards-aligned instructional resources to guide the scope and sequence of instruction using a combination of school-provided and teacher-created materials.
  • Assesses and responds to evidence of student learning to differentiate and provide support for learners at a variety of levels.  Engages in frequent instructional coaching and professional learning community collaboration to improve student learning.
  • Fosters a structured and supportive classroom environment that is consistent with school agreements, is trauma-informed, and provides students with frequent feedback to support their social-emotional development.
  • Guides group sessions to enhance the social development of students and provides peer support in areas such as interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, and diffusement of stress.
  • Promotes highly specialized positive behavior interventions by prioritizing behavior instruction that is explicit, intensive, accelerated, and provides ample practice.
  • Provides behavior assistance at the school-wide prevention level (tier I), at the targeted classroom/small group level (tier II), and at the individual behavioral/mental health level (tier III) to address issues that prevent learning readiness.
  • Designs and implements systems with fidelity to monitor the impact of interventions.  Utilizes student, school, and community data to plan, identify and implement evidence-based, culturally competent prevention strategies to meet student needs.  Uses ongoing progress monitoring to maintain a record of student progress and the success or failure of planned interventions and systems.
  • Conducts conflict resolution and peer mediation sessions using restorative practices.
  • Identifies research-based programs and strategies to help students.  Serves as a resource within the student services team in order to identify and align research-based interventions and supports for Tier II and III students in need.
  • Builds relationships with students and their webs of support.  Communicates strengths and areas for improvement frequently and uses restorative approaches to resolve conflict.
  • Collaborates with colleagues to refer and connect students to wraparound services including Family Empowerment Coaching for internal and community resources, Special Education, and more.
  • Supports the school community by attending extracurricular events such as athletic contests and family nights.

Required Competencies

  • Degree and Credential Requirements – Bachelor’s degree in psychology, human relations, social work, rehabilitation counseling, education, or related fields.
  • Teaching licensure preferred
  • Industry Expertise – Has worked ideally with high school students, in helping them successfully learn and practice key areas of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

  • Critical Thinking – Uses both rationale and reasoning to examine data, processes, and strategies in identifying trends and inconsistencies to create alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Diversity Awareness –  Works with diverse populations including people who have experienced barriers to their education.
