SUMMARY:
Initiate appropriate action in a variety of health problems through direct care, remedial care, referral, or consultation. Provides health care services to students by performing the following duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned

  • Renders emergency First Aid care.
  • Administers medication according to IPS policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates health status/complaints of students and takes action.
  • Provides/obtains relevant information to/from physicians, hospitals, and other agencies for referred students.
  • Performs and supervises skilled nursing procedures as ordered by student’s physician.
  • Schedules and coordinates screening programs.
  • Recognizes and acts on communicable diseases present in school/community.
  • Acts as a resource on immunization needs.
  • Identifies and reports on environmental hazards.
  • Acts as a resource person to students and staff members regarding health education.
  • Teaches the principles of health promotion and disease prevention to individuals and groups.
  • Assumes responsibility for inservice programs for school personnel and others regarding health-related issues of students and others.
  • Encourages and refers parents to obtain medical and dental services for children.
  • Counsels students, teachers, and parents on health problems at school and in the community.
  • Gives guidance and support to students with known medical problems.
  • Maintains daily clinic log.
  • Records data on health record as needed.
  • Maintains First Aid supplies and health center.
  • Maintains and submits accurate records as required by law, board policy, and administrative guidelines.
  • Plans school health program, in cooperation with medical authority and administrative school personnel.
  • Participates in medical examinations and reviews findings to evaluate health status of pupils and progress of program.
  • Instructs classes in health education topics and establishes nursing polices to meet emergencies as needed /requested.
  • Cooperates with school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of school children.
  • Counsels students in good health habits.
  • Works with community agencies in planning facilities to meet needs of children outside school situation.
  • Assists in program for care of disabled children.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors of Science in Nursing and at least five years experience in community health or pediatric nursing.
