Adelante Schools seeks highly motivated, mission-oriented, reflective teachers to serve as Middle School Lead ELA Teachers in a turnaround school setting.

We seek teachers who know that all children are capable of excellence, are committed to continuously improving curriculum and instruction, are hungry for feedback, and always looking for ways to more effectively reach and inspire our students every day in the classroom.

We are looking for teachers who, in close partnership with their principal, grade-level teammates, skills teacher, and many others, are eager to do the heavy lifting of identifying skill gaps in their students and filling them—all while teaching grade-level content and inspiring their students to greatness.

Job Description

In their individual reading classrooms, Lead ELA Teachers are responsible for the implementation of Adelante’s rigorous reading curriculum in both small-group and whole-class instruction. They are responsible for inspiring intellectual curiosity, modeling the joy of learning, and enabling all their students to thrive. Adelante’s Lead ELA Teachers are committed to continuously improving instruction through collaboration as part of a grade-level team. Adelante’s Lead ELA Teachers are eager to develop meaningful relationships with students and families that drive students to love learning and make exceptional academic gains. This position will support 8th grad students.

Specific Responsibilities 

  • Implement curricula and activities to meet academic standards
  • Implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standards, and use assessment data to inform instructional practices
  • Engage in regular training with school leaders to benefit from targeted, in-the-moment feedback on instruction
  • Participate in collaborative curriculum internalization practices, grade-level activities, and school-wide functions
  • Provide consistent rewards and/or consequences for student behavior
  • Be accountable for students mastery of academic standards
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues
  • Attend and participate in events outside of normal school hours (e.g., family nights, student performances, field trips, report card nights, Teacher-Family Conferences, etc.)
  • Participate in an annual three-week summer staff orientation and training
  • Is present and engaged at the school from 7:10 AM to 4:10 PM, Monday-Friday
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Proven track record of high achievement in the classroom
  • Mastery of and enthusiasm for academic subjects
  • Evidence of self-motivation and willingness to be a team player
  • Eagerness for constant observation and feedback
  • Desire to grow professionally
  • The deeply rooted belief that children are capable of reaching the highest bars we set for them
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred
  • Valid Indiana State certification or proof of reciprocal licensure in a different state is required. Applicants in Indiana State-approved alternate certification programs must provide proof of enrollment.
