About the Role 

The Exceptional Learners Teacher is responsible for developing and providing IDEA mandated modifications and accommodations for students with special needs to gain free and appropriate instruction in the subject area curriculum. Under the direction of the school Principal and Exceptional Learners Coordinator, the Exceptional Learners Teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with exceptional learning needs and collaborates with the general education teacher. The Exceptional Learners Teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes and assists in developing Individual Education Programs (IEP).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Exceptional Learners (Special Education) teachers work under the direct supervision of the principal, with additional support from the Exceptional Learners Coordinator.
  • Help create an environment inclusive of students with disabilities, set high expectations, and deliver targeted instruction for students with exceptional needs.
  • Use various data sources for IEP development and amendments, developing lessons, and determining students’ progress toward goals; write IEP progress reports using specific data describing progress toward goals.
  • Plan and deliver meaningful instruction in and outside the general education classroom that aligns to grade-level academic standards, mapped backward to target students’ present levels of performance.
  • Write and implement IEPs designed with student, parent, and general education teacher input, various data sources, target priority skills, and include meaningful accommodations and classroom supports.
  • Deliver targeted instruction to students individually or in small groups; use data to track and communicate student progress; and propose adaptations to IEP programming.
  • Support development of behavior intervention plans (BIPs) or informal behavior systems; hold students accountable to high behavioral expectations while supporting their social-emotional development.
  • Engage families meaningfully to discuss their child’s progress and include input on IEPs, evaluation decisions, and Secondary Transition Plans.
  • Engage parents and families in their child’s academic success by fostering an ongoing relationship centered around hopes and dreams.
  • Drive academic outcomes by analyzing student work and data and implementing high-leverage instructional moves to ensure gains for all learners.
  • Work collaboratively with general and special education teachers to plan and deliver a general education curriculum.
  • Work collaboratively with general education teachers to ensure they implement accommodations and supports for students as outlined in their IEP.
  • Participate in Liberty Grove Schools’ learning community, professional development, and weekly grade-level planning sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Graduate Degree preferred
  • Teaching experience (required)
  • Special Education teaching experience (preferred)
