SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Provide proactive leadership that engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help students achieve success in high school and with post-secondary planning. Secondary School Counselors align and work with the school’s mission to support the academic achievement of all students. The mission is accomplished through the design, development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive, developmental and systematic school-counseling program.
They utilize leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, to promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and persona/social development for all students.
EDUCATION: Master’s Degree required in school counseling
LICENSE: Must hold a valid Indiana State Teacher’s school guidance counselor license.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
MAJOR FUNCTION: DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM
Discusses the comprehensive school counseling program with the school administrator.
Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program based on current individual school data.
Communicates the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to education stakeholders (i.e., administrators, teachers, students, parents, and community/business leaders).
Maintains current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders.
Uses the majority of time providing direct services through the Guidance Curriculum, Individual Student Planning and Preventive and Responsive Services, and most remaining time in program management, system support, and accountability as recommended by the American School Counselor Association.
Uses data to develop and implement comprehensive programs that meet student needs.
MAJOR FUNCTION: DELIVERY OF A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM
Provides leadership and collaborates with teachers to provide classroom guidance that supports academic achievement, college and career readiness and/or social/emotional success.
Incorporates into their programs the post-secondary skills that students need to be successful in the twenty-first century.
Individual Student Planning
Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals, and plans.
Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data.
Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational, career, and life planning.
Preventive and Responsive Services
Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
Implements an effective referral and follow-up process as needed.
Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
Communicate with students, parents, and other staff members concerning student academic progress, attendance, behavior.
Provides appropriate information to school personnel related to the comprehensive high school counseling program.
Assists teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
Uses available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program.
Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.
MAJOR FUNCTION: ACCOUNTABILITY
Conducts a yearly program audit to review extent of program implementation and effectiveness.
Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis.
Measures results of the comprehensive high school counseling program activities and shares results as appropriate with relevant stakeholders.
Monitors student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitates appropriate interventions.
Perform other adjunct duties as assigned by supervisor.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must hold a valid Indiana State Teacher’s school guidance counselor license.
