Adelante Schools seeks highly motivated, mission-oriented, reflective teachers to serve as Lead Middle School Physical Education Teacher in a turnaround school setting.

We are looking for teachers who, in close partnership with their principal, grade-level teammates, and many others, are eager to do the heavy lifting of identifying skill gaps in their students and filling them—all while teaching grade-level content and inspiring their students to greatness.

Job Description

Adelante’s Fitness/Physical Education Teacher is passionate about preparing students to grow into healthy and vigorous adolescents and adults. The Fitness/Physical Education Teacher designs and executes a rigorous curriculum that promotes physical activity, healthy eating habits, sportsmanship, teamwork, and effective learning in the classroom. The curriculum should take full advantage of the school’s gymnasium and athletic field to engage students in a wide variety of sports and activities. The Fitness/Physical Education Teacher also plays a vital role in supporting the school’s academic programming as a pull-out reading teacher. The Fitness/Physical Education Teacher also will start and coach sports teams and facilitate other clubs and activities.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Implement curricula and activities to meet physical education standards
  • Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards physical education standards
  • Use assessment data to refine curriculum and inform instructional practices
  • Participate in the collaborative curriculum development process
  • Provide consistent rewards and/or consequences for student behavior to ensure that students observe the school’s core values, high expectations, and code of conduct
  • Be accountable for students’ mastery of physical education standards
  • Share responsibility for grade-level and school-wide activities
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues
  • Participate actively in department meetings, faculty meetings, and other meetings, including an annual three-week summer staff orientation and training
  • Provide appropriate supervision of students during class, breaks, meals, specials, and transitions to maintain an optimal work environment and to ensure students’ safety and well-being
  • Attend and participate in events outside of normal school hours (e.g., family nights, student performances, field trips, report card nights, Teacher-Family Conferences, etc.)
  • Consistently demonstrate belief in and alignment with Adelante’s core values and educational philosophy
  • Design and document a curriculum for a physical education course that meets every day for every student in classes (e.g., develop a scope and sequence, produce weekly syllabi and daily lesson plans, create a curriculum binder, integrate a wide variety of activities including fitness centers, sports, and cooperative games, etc.)
  • Assist in the purchase of the school’s athletic equipment and materials
  • Monitor and maintain the school’s athletic equipment and materials
  • Contributing to the development of a competitive team sports program
  • Attending and participating in practices, scrimmages, and interscholastic athletic competitions outside of normal school hours
  • Serve as the primary source for reading coverage
  • Is present and engaged at the school from 7:10 AM to 4:10 PM, Monday-Friday
  • Plays a vital role in supporting the school’s academic programming as a pull-out reading teachers
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Eagerness for constant observation and feedback
  • Desire to grow professionally
  • Deeply rooted belief that children are capable of reaching the highest bars we set for them
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public district school or urban public charter school setting.
  • Valid Indiana State certification or proof of reciprocal licensure in a different state is required. Applicants in Indiana State-approved alternate certification programs must provide proof of enrollment.
