Teach Indy Educators Conference


With a focus on the idea of ‘Teach.Lead.Change’ this year’s event will center innovative work being done in classrooms across Marion County. Participants will learn about what is working in schools across Indiana directly from the educators leading classrooms every day. Then participants will have the opportunity to customize and make plans to implement changes in their own practice as early as Monday!

Conference Keynote

We are thrilled to welcome, Sharif El-Mekki, Founder and CEO, Center for Black Educator Development as our Keynote Speaker.

Prior to founding the Center, El-Mekki served as a nationally recognized principal and U.S. Department of Education Principal Ambassador Fellow. His school, Mastery Charter Shoemaker, was recognized by President Obama and Oprah Winfrey, and was awarded the prestigious EPIC award for three consecutive years as being amongst the top three schools in the country for accelerating students’ achievement levels. The Shoemaker Campus was also recognized as one of the top ten middle school and top ten high schools in the state of Pennsylvania for accelerating the achievement levels of African-American students. In 2014, El-Mekki founded The Fellowship – Black Male Educators for Social Justice, an organization dedicated to recruiting, retaining, and developing Black male teachers. El-Mekki blogs on Phillys7thWard, is a member of the 8 Black Hands podcast and serves on several boards and committees focused on educational and racial justice.

With inspirational keynote speeches from Dr. Erica Buchanan-Rivera and a panel of future educators, as well as incredible breakout sessions our 2023 conference was one to remember. Here are just a few conference highlights, by the numbers:

Conference Policies and Procedures

COVID-19 Policy: Teach Indy will continue to monitor and follow CDC guidelines in regards to best practices for COVID-19. We will communicate directly with registrants with any updates impacting the conference.

If you have COVID-19, you can spread it to others, even if you do not have symptoms. If you have symptoms, get tested and stay home until you have your results. If you have tested positive (even without symptoms), follow CDC’s  isolation recommendations. These recommendations include staying home and away from others for at least 5 days (possibly more, depending on how the virus affects you) and wearing a high-quality mask when indoors around others for a period of time.
